Charles W. Spence, Jr., 43, of Plainsboro, was driving a 2013 Honda CRV south on Clarksville Road shortly before 3 p.m. Monday when he veered into the shoulder of the road, hitting a parked 2010 Toyota Rav 4, police said.

The Toyota spun and hit Jyotsna Chopra Khanna, 31, of Plainsboro, who was standing near the car, which also held her 4-year-old son in a car seat in the back of the SUV, police said.

The boy was unharmed. Khanna was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton with serious injuries, police said.

Spence's Honda flipped, coming to a stop upright on its wheels. A 6-year-old boy in a car seat in the back was unharmed. Spence was taken to Capital Health Regional with minor injuries, police said.

Police determined that Spence was driving while drunk and had an open beer in the car at the time of the crash, police said.

Spence was charged with driving while intoxicated, assault by auto, driving while intoxicated with a child in the vehicle, endangering the welfare of a child, open alcohol in a car, alcohol consumption in a car, reckless driving and careless driving. He was released on $5,000 bail, police said.

Clarksville Road was closed for about 1.5 hours after the collision, police said.
