TRENTON -- Police are investigating after six people were wounded by gunfire in a span of 12 minutes Tuesday night.
The first call came in at 8:42 p.m. for a report of a man shot in the 100 block of Pearl Street. Responding officers found a 42-year-old man who had gunshot wounds to his left abdomen and left thigh, said Lt. Stephen Varn.
He was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery and is in stable condition, Varn said.
The officers later learned that two more people had also been hit by the gunfire. A 17-year-old boy was grazed in the back of his head and right foot and a 21-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to his right shoulder and back of his right ankle, Varn said.
They told police they were in the area when two men walked on Pearl Street from Hudson Street and one began firing at them. They fled and were en route to the hospital in a personal car, but were able to flag down a passing ambulance. The teenager was treated and released, Varn said.
Two minutes after the first shooting, there was a report of shots fired in the first block of Middle Rose Street, Varn said. Officers arrived to find a 20-year-old man with gunshot wounds to his legs and a 50-year-old woman who had been hit in her right foot.
Both were taken to the hospital. The man is in stable condition and the woman was treated and released.
The woman told police she was in the area with a friend when a car drove by and fired numerous rounds.
The sixth victim was a 33-year-old man who was shot during a robbery attempt at the corner of Pennington and Alden avenues around 8:54 p.m., Varn said.
He told police he was walking in the area when he was approached from the rear by a man armed with a handgun, demanding money. Varn said a physical struggle ensued between the two when the gun was fired and the man was struck in the left foot. The suspect fled and the man was taken to the hospital.
All three incidents are being investigated by the Shooting Response Team.
They follow a violent weekend that left three dead and four others wounded.
Councilman-at-Large Duncan Harrison is holding a press conference at 5:30 p.m. on the corner of Stuyvesant and Hoffman avenues to discuss the recent uptick in violence and offer "bold initiatives" to combat crime.
