TRENTON -- A Bordentown Township man will serve over six years in federal prison for robbing banks in Hamilton and Ewing last year.

Robert C. Smith, 40, was sentenced in late March to 78 months behind bars for for holding up the First Bank on Kuser Road in Hamilton on March 2, 2015 and the Hopewell Valley Community Bank branch on Scotch Road in Ewing five days later.

He pleaded guilty to the bank robbery charges in December, in U.S. District Court in Trenton.

Smith's plea agreement, and also documented at his sentencing, states he must make restitution to each bank: $2,947 to First Bank and $119 to Hopewell Valley Community Bank.

In July 2015, federal authorities charged Smith with stealing $2,947 from the First Bank in Hamilton and $11,030 at the Hopewell Valley branch in Ewing.

When apprehended several days after the robberies in Philadelphia, Smith admitted to robbing both banks and told investigators that he still had cash inside the gray Nissan Pathfinder he was driving.

Officers later found $10,911 in cash in the car from the Ewing robbery, authorities said.

Following the Hamilton heist, police made public surveillance of the robbery and an officer later said that within 90 minutes of the robbery footage going online, detectives received tips identifying Smith as a suspect.

Smith was also sentenced to three years of supervised release once released from prison. He will serve his sentence at the Federal Correctional Institute at Fairton, a medium-security prison in Cumberland County.
