Today's letters: Hamilton needs to make a change & Hamilton Township Board of Education member Christopher Scales thanks voters

It was encouraging to read that nations around the world have recognized the impact of human activity on climate change and proposed steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  This needs to be done at all levels of government, which is why it was inspiring to read in The Times earlier this month that nine towns in Mercer County implemented goals and became certified sustainable communities.

Sadly, my own town, Hamilton, most populous in Mercer County, was not listed as a sustainable community.  While Hamilton has registered, actions are required. With all the WaWa's, WalMart's and warehouses going up, a seemingly easy action to take would be an ordinance requiring businesses such as these to install solar panels on roofs.  A step such as this would be good not only for the bottom line of the businesses but also for the environment.  I hope the next time these lists of sustainable communities are published we see Hamilton among them.

We will not be able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions unless every person, community, state and country takes action.  The fate of life on this planet depends on what we do.

Hamilton

January embarks one year since I have been blessed with a great gift, the opportunity to serve the residents of Hamilton Township. Everyday, I am thankful for the trust instilled in me to serve on the Hamilton Township Board of Education, and I hope that I have been a representative that Hamiltonians are proud of.
Again, thank you to the people of Hamilton for allowing me to serve.

Christopher Scales

Member, Hamilton Township Board of Education
