Brion Greenfield, 30, was pronounced dead at a Trenton hospital Wednesday evening.

TRENTON -- The man killed in Trenton Wednesday afternoon was a convicted felon who was charged this summer with escaping from custody at a city hospital and breaking into a home.

Brion Greenfield, 30, was pronounced dead at a Trenton hospital Wednesday evening, shortly after police found him shot in North Trenton's Martin Luther King Jr. Park.

The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office identified Greenfield late Wednesday.

Trenton police said they responded to the area after receiving a report of shots fire at about 4:40 p.m. in the 600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Investigators were concentrating in an area of the park near Proctor Avenue.

In late July, Greenfield, then 29 and clad in a hospital gown and with a pair of handcuffs dangling from his wrist, led city police on a foot chase through North Trenton.

Before the officers re-handcuffed him, police said at the time, Greenfield broke a window at one home and forced his way into a second while shoeless, but wearing socks.

He had escaped from the custody of Mercer County corrections officers at Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton.

Greenfield had been arrested July 28 in Trenton for robbery, for allegedly demanding cash from a male at gunpoint on Union Street in South Trenton.

Trenton warrant unit officers apprehended Greenfield a short time later on Federal Street and found a toy gun in his vehicle, Trenton police said at the time.

He was taken to the hospital a short time later, the same day, but authorities did not explain why at the time. Mercer County corrections officers took custody of Greenfield at the hospital, where he was arraigned, officials said.

Two days later, Trenton police received a report that Greenfield escaped from the Trenton hospital and was on foot in North Trenton. Officials said he escaped his handcuffs.

In addition to the original robbery, Greenfield was additionally charged with burglary, escape and resisting arrest.

Later in August a Mercer County judge ruled against lowering Greenfield's $100,000 bail for the robbery charge. It's unclear when he was eventually released from custody.

Greenfield has criminal convictions for eluding authorities in April of this year and robbery from 2010, state records show.

Trenton police officers who regularly work the North Trenton area knew Greenfield well as stickup robber, one officer said Wednesday night.

Greenfield's killing is the second in as many days in Trenton.

Early Tuesday, at about 6:15 a.m., police found the body of 19-year-old Elvin Kimble behind a house on Division Street in the Chambersburg neighborhood.

Authorities suspect Kimble was wounded during a 12:40 a.m. shooting nearby at Chestnut Avenue and Rusling Street and ran about a half a block away, where he collapsed and died. A gun was found near Kimble's body, police said.

Both homicides are under investigation by the Mercer County Homicide Task Force.
