Two people were sent to the hospital Sunday after a fire started on Genesee Street in Trenton. Police are investigating whether the fire was suspicious.
TRENTON -- Authorities are are trying to determine if a serious house fire that sent two people to the hospital Sunday night is a case of arson.
Firefighters were called to the scene around 6:45 p.m. in the 900 block of Genesee Street.
"Right away it was upgraded," Fire Director Qareeb Bashir said, adding that mutual aid firefighters from other towns were called to the scene. "Every piece of equipment in the city was pretty much committed."
One resident was rescued by first responders and taken to a hospital in Philadelphia for his injuries. Bashir did not have the man's identity but said that he was an adult and he was critically injured.

A firefighter fell through a floor in the house and was sent to St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton for minor injuries and was released later Sunday night, Bashir said.
Investigators at the scene noticed that the fire was present both inside and outside of the house, indicating that the flames could be suspicious and possibly started with an accelerant, Bashir said.
The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office, Trenton police detectives and the Trenton Fire Marshal Unit are investigating the cause of the fire.
Bashir did not have an exact time for when firefighters got the flames under control but he said responders were still at the scene around 10 p.m. Sunday.
