In the first, a 29-year-old man arrived at St. Francis Medical Center around 3 p.m. with two gunshot wounds - one to his upper torso and one to his left leg, Lt. Stephen Varn said.

The man said he was walking on Chambers Street when he heard another approach from behind and heard a man say "Give it up,'' Varn said.

The victim then heard a gunshot and started running. He heard another and realized he had been hit. The man then walked to St. Francis emergency room, Varn said.

Minutes later, a 32-year-old man was dropped off at St. Francis by a friend. He was shot in the right leg, Varn said.

The man said he was walking on the 200 block of Pearl Street when a black man wearing all black came up behind him and said, "You know what it is,'' and pulled a gun, Varn said.

The victim said he fought the gunman and heard the handgun fire twice. The gunman ran away and the victim flagged down a friend who gave him a ride to the hospital, Varn said.

The shooting response team is investigating both incidents, Varn said.
