HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP -- An Instagram page that warns of creepy clowns and appears like it was created by Timberlane Middle School is a fake, the Hopewell Valley school district said Wednesday.
"This account is not maintained by the district and the district has not had any sightings or issued any warnings related to clowns," Superintendent Thomas A. Smith wrote in an email to district parents Wednesday.
Smith, in the email, said the district learned of the account earlier Wednesday.
"We are currently working with local authorities to investigate the posting and have this fake account removed," the email said. "As an extra precaution, I have asked our police to maintain a visible presence around our schools."

Hopewell police Lt. Chris Kascik said the department is patrolling the schools with extra attention, "purely as a precautionary matter."
Smith wrote that official district information is communicated to district families through email, phone and via the district's website - not through social media.
