PRINCETON -- Police have charged a Princeton man with felony assault for allegedly hitting a man in the head with a stick on a canal towpath Sunday, Princeton police said.
James Straus, 50, faces aggravated assault and two weapon charges in connection with the 2:45 p.m. altercation Sunday near Quaker Road, Princeton police said Tuesday.
The victim, a 55-year-old male from the Belle Mead section of Montgomery, was taken to University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro for treatment of a cut to the head following the incident.
Police said in a statement the men had an altercation and Straus allegedly ended it by picking up the stick and striking the man in the head.
Police did not say why the men were allegedly fighting.
Straus was released on his own recognizance from Princeton police headquarters following his arrest.
The Delaware & Raritan Canal runs through Princeton and has towpaths next to it that are popular with people exercising.
