The man admitted to shooting a victim in Trenton and attacking an officer in jail
TRENTON - A man who admitted to shooting a victim in the leg and assaulting a corrections officer in jail, was sentenced to four years in prison Friday.
Byron Williams, 22, was sentenced by Superior Court Jude Peter Warshaw Friday, He previously pleaded guilty to two counts of assault for the attacks.
The sentence is related to the shooting in July 2014, when a 24-year-old man showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg. The man had been shot on the 200 block of Coolidge Avenue, police said at the time.
Williams was charged with the shooting a month later, while he was incarcerated on a parole violation charge, police said.
Defense attorneys for Williams said on Friday that he had also pleaded guilty to assaulting a corrections officer about a week after he was brought to the jail.
Speaking in court Friday, Williams said he apologized for, "whatever happened to the victims."
Williams must spend 85 percent of his sentence - or around three and a half years - in prison before he is eligible for parole.
