TRENTON -- Hightstown is the latest town to make its parks smoke-free after the borough's council passed an ordinance this month.
Smoking is now prohibited in Association Park, Dawes Park, Memorial Park, Rocky Brook Park and Roger C. Cook Greenway as well as in borough-owned vehicles.
"This is a quality-of-life issue for our residents," Councilman Connor Montferrat said. "It sets the standard and expectation of our community. I'm thrilled that we are protecting families and children from secondhand smoke at our parks."
The measure can be enforced by the business administrator, health officer, a police officer or any resident who chooses to sign a complaint against the violator. Violators are subject to a $25 fine.
No-smoking ordinances have been adopted in 295 municipalities across the state. In Mercer County, similar measures have been passed in Ewing, Princeton, Trenton and West Windsor.
