A 75-year-old woman was rescued from the fire at the Montana Avenue house and taken to the hospital with injuries
HAMILTON - A 79-year-old was killed and 75-year-old was hospitalized Saturday after a fire raced through a house on Montana Avenue, police said.
Officers and firefighters were called to the scene of the fire around 8 a.m. Saturday on the 300 block of Montana Avenue, police said. There they found heavy smoking coming from the house.
Emergency personnel first found a 75-year-old woman who was rescued from the building and taken to the hospital with injuries. A short time later they found the body of a 79-year-old woman who had died in the house, police said.
Police said they could not release names of the victims Saturday night until all family members were notified.
A neighbor who lived across the street recalled the chaos of the morning Saturday.
"There was a whole bunch of smoke," Veronica Lopez said, adding that she saw one woman get taken out of the fire. "I'm so surprised. This neighborhood is so quiet."
Officers were still at the scene around 11 a.m. Saturday, clearing debris from inside the burned house.
