Maurice Leonard, 28, and his girlfriend, Turia Justice, 27, were charged with endangering the welfare of a child
TRENTON -- The father of the 5-year-old boy who brought 30 packets of heroin to school has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
An investigation following the Sept. 12 incident led to warrants being issued for Maurice Leonard, 28, and his girlfriend, 27-year-old Turia Justice, said Lt. Stephen Varn.
They were arrested Wednesday night on the 100 block of Coolidge Avenue.
The boy -- a kindergartener at the International Academy of Trenton Charter School's Bellevue Avenue campus -- had been playing with a small white object that his teacher initially believed to be a candy wrapper, Varn said at the time.
The teacher told him to put it away but when he resumed playing with it a few minutes later, she discovered it was a packet of heroin. Twenty-nine more packets were found in the boy's lunchbox, Varn said.
He was taken to the hospital, but tested negative for opioids.
Varn did not have information on how the boy was able to get the drugs.
Maurice Justice, 30, who was also in the house, was taken into custody on unrelated warrants from Trenton and Lawrence totaling $4,314.
