The funding will be used for a fitness program and equipment for firefighters, including the replacement of equipment.

HAMILTON -- The township's Fire District 7 has been awarded a $100,386 federal grant to create a physical fitness program for its firefighters.

"Firefighters' work is physically demanding, and FEMA offers these grants to help keep firefighters in good shape, which not only benefits the firefighters, but all residents whom they serve," U.S. Rep. Chris Smith (R-4th Dist.) said in announcing the grant.

Smith has helped secure similar grants for Hamilton Fire District 3 last year, and the Robbinsville Fire Dept. earlier this year.

The company will use the money to fund a fitness program for firefighters and replace or repair existing training equipment, plus pay for classes and physicals, former District 7 Fire Chief Thomas Gribbin said in a statement.

Robbinsville firefighters awarded $13K grant

"We would like to thank Congressman Smith for his strong support for the grant and of the health of firefighters," Gribbin said. "For us it's all about making sure firefighters are in healthy shape and can carry someone out of a fire."

Fire District 7 is located at the Nottingham Fire Co. on Mercer Street in Hamilton Square. Gribbin is still the chief of Fire District 3.

The award comes through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grants program and is administered by FEMA in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration.
