TRENTON -- A man charged last week with sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl allegedly abused the victim for about three years, a Mercer County prosecutor alleged Tuesday.
Victor De La Cruz, 32, of Trenton, was charged with aggravated sexual assault following an interview with Trenton detectives Aug. 7.
The prosecutor discussed the case against De La Cruz during a bail hearing in Mercer County Superior Court, after which a judge reduced his bail from $300,000 to $250,000.
De La Cruz is not a United States citizen and if he were to make bail, he would be turned over to federal immigration authorities, who have a detainer lodged against him, the prosecutor's office said.
Trenton police have said the investigation that led to De La Cruz being charged began when the girl reported that a woman had allegedly beaten he.
That part of the investigation led detectives to charge Veronica Mena, 32, of Trenton with endangering the welfare of a child. Mena was not in court Tuesday.
Trenton police did not elaborate on the relationship between the suspects and the girl.
