Prosecutors said Alberto Perez told police that he was in the area at the time of the shooting, but he denies any involvement.
TRENTON -- The suspect charged with killing a man with a shot to the chest earlier this month was identified by an eyewitness at the scene, authorities said Monday at his bail hearing.
Alberto Perez's Honda Civic was also spotted at the scene, a prosecutor said.
Perez remained silent Monday in Mercer County Superior Court as his bail was maintained at $750,000 for his suspected role in the street-corner murder of 32-year-old Jonathan Jimenez.
Perez, 37, is accused of shooting Jimenez in the chest on the first block of Cummings Avenue, near Chestnut Avenue, around 10:30 p.m. on August 5, 2016.
During the bail hearing, prosecutors said that Perez told police that he was in the area at the time of the shooting, but he denies any involvement.
When officers arrived around 11:15 p.m. they found Jimenez unconscious in the road.
He was rushed to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, where he died a short time later.

Perez moved to Trenton from Puerto Rico about 16 years ago and has been working as a landscaper, Judge Pedro Jimenez said at the bail hearing.
He was already in custody at the Mercer County jail in Hopewell Township on unrelated warrants when he was charged in the killing, prosecutors have said.
Judge Jimenez said during the hearing that Perez is currently on probation for two burglaries that occurred in 2012.
Perez is being held at Mercer County Correctional Center.
