Township officials said nearby residents should expect water loss and all traffic should avoid the area.
LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP --Water blanketed the road in front of Notre Dame High School in Lawrence Wednesday afternoon when a water main ruptured along Route 206.
A front loader, dump trucks, police cruisers and city vehicles served as road blocks to prevent cars from passing through the rising water.
A police official at the site said there was no known cause of the breach at this time.
Lawrence officials issued a community alert of the breakage at 4:40 p.m.
Trenton Water Works employees are on the scene to begin repairs.
Officials do not yet have an idea of the extent of the seriousness of the fracture or how long it will take to repair the main.
Police said that a nearby fire hydrant was opened to relive pressure from the water main so that workers could safely start repairs and view the leak.
The alert issued by the township said residents in the surrounding areas should expect water loss.
The route is closed in front of Notre Dame High School and township officials said in the alert that all traffic should avoid the area.
