HOPEWELL BOROUGH -- Firefighters searched Hopewell Elementary School grounds inside and out, but found no signs of a gas leak that prompted the evacuation of the building, authorities said.
The school was vacated shortly before noon on Wednesday as police and firefighters responded to concerns over the odor of gas.
"A teacher smelled what she thought was gas," Hopewell Township Police Lt. William Springer said.
Students and faculty waited outside for a short time until fire department officials could verify there was no leak.
"The kids were only out of school a half hour -- tops." Lt. Springer said.
Wednesday was the last day of school and students were scheduled to be dismissed at 12:45 p.m.
