HAMILTON -- The Mercer County Office of Veteran Services held a flag retirement ceremony Tuesday evening at Veterans Park in Hamilton, burning numerous old, tattered flags on Flag Day.
The office has been collecting the flags for the past few months with help from the American Legion Post 31.
Flags came from private homes, the veterans section of Greenwood Cemetery in Hamilton, and were dropped off at local government offices.
During the annual, time-honored ceremony, flags that are "no longer fit for display" are burned in a dignified manner - placed in a pit and ignited.
Township firefighters then douse the flames once they flags are ashes.
