The exact cause of Tuesday's fire, though, is under investigation, Powell said.
JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST -- Base firefighters have been containing and extinguishing a wildfire on two ranges for most of the day, base officials said.
U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. Chris Powell, a base spokesman, said such range fires are not uncommon, especially when units are training on the ranges and the weather is hot and dry.
The exact cause of Tuesday's fire, though, is under investigation, Powell said.
A Pennsylvania Army National Guard unit has been on base for the past several days for mortar training, the base previously said.
Tuesday's fire was reported about 8:30 a.m. and spread to a neighboring range, Powell said. At about 3 p.m., base firefighters were close to containing the fire, which had spread to Range 47.
Smoke form the fire could be seen for miles around the base.
