HAMILTON -- Police officers responding to a report of a suspicious person in Yardville early Friday found a man suffering a gunshot wound to his jaw nearby, police said.
Detectives were investigating the circumstances of the shooting, while the male - who was only identified as a Trenton resident - was undergoing treatment at a Trenton hospital, police said.
The first suspicious person call to police was at 2:25 a.m. Friday, from the 300 block of Yardville-Allentown Road.
While officers were on the way to the area, they found a male on foot in the 4300 block of South Broad Street with a wound to his jaw.
He told police officers he was a passenger in an unknown vehicle, traveling on a nearby highway, when he heard a gunshot and realized he had been shot.
At that point, the male immediately jumped out of the car and began running, police said.
Police said the victim was unable to provide any additional information and was then taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton. The male's condition was unknown late Friday morning.
Detectives said later Friday they suspect the victim was in a car traveling on nearby Route 130 with acquaintances when he was wounded.
