The incident happened around 4 p.m. at the intersection of Hamilton and Canal avenues when police arrested Jose Montalvo, 48, on aggressive panhandling charges, Lt. Stephen Varn said.

Montalvo, who was known to police to have active warrants, was seen walking up to cars at the intersection, knocking on windows and asking for money, Varn said.

Police arrested Montalvo, and placed him in handcuffs when he began screaming obscenities and spitting at officers. He tried to bang his head on the police car, fell to the ground and began banging his head on the ground, Varn said.

Police struggled with Montalvo, trying to prevent him from hurting himself. Montalvo got away from police, ramming his head into the rear driver's side window of the police car, shattering the glass, Varn said.

Montalvo was taken to St. Francis Medical Center and treated for his injuries, Varn said.

Montalvo was charged with criminal mischief, resisting arrest, obstructing traffic, soliciting and three outstanding warrants, according to police records.
