EWING -- The police department has tested and tweaked it's body-worn cameras and they are now on patrol with officers, Ewing Police Chief John Stemler said.

Officers working patrol are required to wear a camera for their 12-hour shift and that started Monday, Stemler said.

"Although testing is complete, this is new technology and we will continue to evaluate and make changes to our program as we discover what doesn't work and what will make it work better," Stemler said.

Ewing bought 35 Vista model cameras made by WatchGuard, the department said.

The Ewing council in October approved a resolution to spend $34,042.50 for the cameras, through a state-approved contract.

And in December, Ewing was earmarked to receive a $17,500 grant from the state Attorney General's Office as part of a $2.5 million program to buy 5,000 body cameras for 176 departments through the state.

"We believe that the use of these cameras, along with other programs that we are implementing such as foot and bike patrols as well as our school monitoring assignments, where officers visit the schools to walk around and interact with the students, will help us continue to foster our relationship with the community and the trust that the community has in us," Stemler said.
