New Jersey State Prison in Trenton houses the "most difficult and/or dangerous offenders in the inmate population," according to the Department of Corrections' website. Watch video
TRENTON -- The inmate who escaped from a minimum-security prison last week was taken to a facility that houses the most dangerous offenders in the state, New Jersey State Prison.
State Department of Corrections officials won't publicly comment on where Arthur Buckel, 38, was lodged after he was captured Monday morning in the woods on the side of the Garden State Parkway in Lacey Township.
But, according to the DOC's website, Buckel was admitted into New Jersey State Prison in Trenton on Monday.
"All I can say is that he's at a secure facility," Syed Hassan, spokesman for the DOC, told NJ Advance Media. "I can't reveal anything more than that."
According to the DOC website, New Jersey State Prison is the only completely maximum security facility in the state. Behind its walls are some of the "most difficult and/or dangerous offenders in the inmate population," the state's website says. "The facility provides a level of custodial supervision and control beyond that of any other state prison."
Buckel was discovered missing on May 3 during a morning bed check at Bayside State Prison's satellite location at Ancora in Winslow Township, a minimum-security facility.
He was serving a sentence for burglary and theft charges, and was eligible for parole on May 21.
In a statement sent to news outlets on Monday, Hassan said Buckel would be evaluated by the department's medical unit and then taken to a "secure facility." He will also be interviewed by the Special Investigation division of the Department of Corrections to determine why he escaped.
Buckel faces an additional three to five years in prison for escaping, and could face additional charges for offenses committed while he was on the run, according to Hassan.
As of Tuesday morning, Buckel was not scheduled to appear in court in any of the counties he traveled through last week, or from the county where the prison he escaped from is located -- Camden County.
