Rudy Monzon-Martinez was charged with making threats and weapons offenses after a fight with his wife last year

TRENTON - A Guatemalan man who wielded a machete and threatened to kill his wife at a bar last year, was given two years probation for the incident Friday.

Rudy Monzon-Martinez, 33, who was charged with making terroristic threats and weapons charges after the incident in May, 2015, will also need to take anger management classes, Superior Court Judge Darlene Pereksta ordered Friday.

The charges stem from an incident last spring when Monzon-Martinez and his wife got into an argument at the Flamingo Bar on Anderson Street. He threw a bottle at his wife, which missed her, and was ordered to leave the bar, police have said.

But he wasn't gone for long and when he returned, Monzon-Martinez had a machete. He went up to the bar, looking for his wife and wielding the weapon but was turned away, police said. When officers were called to the scene, they found the 33-year-old hiding in a bush.

Pereksta issued the probation sentence Friday with a caveat - if Monzon-Martinez gets in trouble again, he could face 18 months in prison.

She said she was very concerned about his anger issues and the fact that he was able to get a machete so easily. An attorney representing Monzon-Martinez said that while he is undocumented, he is working on his status with a separate immigration attorney.
