Kirvy Mims, 48, was sentenced to eight years in prison Friday, just a few months after he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault for the crime a year ago.

Authorities have said Mims met the man through a dating website and went with the man to a Lawrence Red Roof Inn in October, 2014.

Once there, Mims slashed the man's throat with a claw hammer and robbed him before leaving the room with the man's vehicle, authorities have said. Officers were called to the room where they found the man tied up by his hands and feet and bleeding from a head wound, police have said.

Man accused of attempted murder

Police found Mims in the stolen car. Though he initially denied assaulting anyone, he later told police he had been high on cocaine at the time, according to authorities.

Mims was initially charged with attempted murder but pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in February.

The 64-year-old victim died of a heart attack a month after the assault but his death was not related to the incident, according to the prosecutor's office.

Mims must serve 85 percent of his eight-year sentence - or nearly seven years - in prison before he is eligible for parole.
