A Princeton University fire at an off-campus housing apartment left several students displaced Sunday.
PRINCETON - A fire at an off-campus Princeton University apartment left several students displaced Sunday, officials said.
Firefighters responded to the two-story apartment fire on Edwards Place at 1 p.m. where they found flames in the walls and ceiling of the first floor, Princeton Fire Department Director of Emergency Services Bob Gregory said.
"When the deputy chief arrived he saw smoke coming from the back side of the house," Gregory said.
He said two students living in the apartment ran out uninjured and it appeared no one else was in the building at the time of the fire.
Gregory said the fire's cause is under investigation. About four students live in the unit.
Gregory said Princeton University will provide housing for the students until the building is deemed safe to move back in.
"I saw smoke coming from the house," A man who lives on Edward Place said. He said he does not know who lives in the apartment but said it is student housing.
Gregory said several fire departments from Princeton, Lawrence and Plainsboro helped put out the blaze, which took 20 minutes to bring under control.
