PRINCETON -- Princeton University men's lacrosse coach Chris Bates is no longer employed by the university after elbowing an opposing player last weekend, the university said Wednesday.
Princeton said the move came after a review of the incident, which occurred during a game at Brown University April 2. Bates had been put on leave earlier this week pending the review.
Bates was in his seventh season at Princeton and led the Tigers to Ivy League championships in 2010, 2012 and 2015.
The team's offensive coordinator Matt Madalon will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season, after which Princeton will conduct a national search for a permanent head coach, the statement said.
A video of the game video shows Bates sticking out his elbow and hitting Brown midfielder John Yozzo-Scaperrotta as he was running off the field.

Early in the third period, off a faceoff win, Yozzo-Scaperrotta collided with Princeton midfielder Austin deButts, Lacrosse Magazine reported. Yozzo-Scaperrotta had fallen down in front of Princeton's bench and was running to the sideline when Bates hit him.
Madalon is a former major League Lacrosse goalie and a member of the most recent hall of fame class at Roanoke College. He's in his third year on the Princeton staff and spent seven seasons as a coach at Stevens Tech.
Bates had a record of 53-42 with the Tigers. His bio says that his "calmness and strength serve as the bedrock of the Princeton men's lacrosse program."
Brown eventually won the game 19-8.
