Abdul Louis, 33, is the uncle of the victim's girlfriend
TRENTON - A Trenton man was charged with assault after hospitalizing another man by hitting him with an axe handle in a street fight, police said Wednesday.
Abdul Louis, 33, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and weapons offenses after he swung the axe handle at a man in the street near the intersection of Southard Street and New Brunswick Avenue shortly before 3 p.m. Monday, Lt. Stephen Varn said.
An officer was waiting in traffic at the intersection, about four cars back from the light, when he heard two men loudly yelling, but his view was blocked by a box truck ahead of him, Varn said.
A man ran into the street, yelling and the officer pulled into traffic and turned on the lights on the patrol car, as he saw Louis swing a 3-foot-long axe handle and hit a 37-year-old man in the leg, Varn said.
The officer drew his gun, forcing Louis to drop the axe handle. The victim was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton to be treated for his injuries, including a severe cut on a pinky finger, Varn said.
The victim and his girlfriend earlier that day had an argument over money. The girlfriend called her uncle, Abdul Louis, for help, Varn said.
Louis' bail was set at $10,000, according to police records.
