JERSEY CITY -- The Hamilton man charged with causing the death of a Jersey City teacher and his 5-year-old daughter on Monday was speeding and weaving in and out of traffic and sideswiped a barrier before smashing into the back of the teacher's car, a criminal complaint said.
Witnesses told police Scott Hahn, 36, of Hamilton, was driving erratically as he traveled from the Holland Tunnel to the toll plaza at Interchange 14C of the New Jersey Turnpike's Hudson County Extension, where Tim O'Donnell, 48, and his daughter, Bridget, 5, of Bayonne were killed in the crash.
Hahn's 1998 Mercedes-Benz was traveling "across (westbound) lanes, alternately accelerating and decelerating, sideswiped a road barrier" before it struck O'Donnell's Chevrolet Malibu from behind at 3:19 p.m., the criminal complaint says.
O'Donnell and his daughter were on their way home from County Prep, where O'Donnell taught and Bridget attended daycare.
The impact of the crash propelled O'Donnell's car through the toll plaza and into the eastbound lanes, where it collided with a minivan," the complaint says.
Hahn is charged with two counts of aggravated manslaughter and two counts of vehicular homicide. He is set to make his first court appearance on the charges at 3 p.m. today in Central Judicial Processing court in Jersey City.
O'Donnell, a beloved teacher, pronounced dead at the scene at 3:41 p.m. His daughter was transported to Jersey City Medical Center where she was pronounced dead several minutes after her father, police said.
Hahn was also hospitalized, but he was released into police custody yesterday.
O'Donnell is survived by his wife, Pam, and a 6-year-old daughter.
