Bill Cirullo was a coach, principal and graduate of Princeton Public Schools. He died Monday morning.
PRINCETON - Longtime Riverside Elementary School Principal Bill Cirullo died Monday morning, Princeton Public Schools announced.
Cirullo, a principal at the elementary school for 30 years, has been a member of the school community for much longer.
He attended Princeton Public Schools from kindergarten age through his high school graduation, Superintendent Steve Cochrane said in a statement Monday.
Cirullo played both football and track when he was a student at Princeton High School and later coached football and lacrosse at the same school.
During his time as a coach Cirullo founded the Bobby Campbell Lacrosse Foundation to both honor a former player and bring lacrosse to underprivileged youth, Cochrane said.
During his time as principal, Cirullo helped to bring a garden, a turtle pond and a black box theater to the school. Prior to his death, Cirullo was also working with children and a landscape designer to create a new playground, Cochrane said.
In 2013, Sustainable Princeton recognized Cirullo for his environmentally-friendly initiatives and awarded him the Distinguished Service Award.
In addition to being an elementary school principal, Cirullo served as the President of the administrators association for the district for years.
"Bill created a very special school culture, one rich in joy, laughter, and new ideas," Cochrane said Monday.
The district will announce when plans have been made for a service, Cochrane said.
