Professor Imani Perry wrote on Facebook that she was mistreated by police and said, "The fact of my blackness is not incidental to this matter." Watch video
PRINCETON - Police officers did nothing wrong when they arrested a Princeton University Professor during a traffic stop last week, the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office said Friday.
The office is investigating the arrest of Imani Perry, an African American Studies professor at Princeton University, by Princeton police officers last weekend.
Perry claimed on Facebook and other social media postings that was treated unfairly after she was pulled over for speeding on Mercer Road. "The fact of my blackness is not incidental to this matter," she wrote.
First Assistant Mercer County Prosecutor Doris Galuchie said Friday that Perry was supposed to meet with the prosecutor's office about the matter, but the professor canceled the meeting.
"Unless Perry comes forward with additional evidence, the case will be closed by a finding exonerating the officer," Galuchie said.
Galuchie said the evidence so far shows Princeton police should be, "commended, not criticized," after the arrest.
Officers discovered Perry she was driving with a suspended license and had a warrants for her arrest, stemming from two 2012 parking tickets.
Perry did not respond to an email Friday about the meeting cancelation. Galuchie said that if the professor does not reschedule the meeting, prosecutors will close the investigation.
The announcement is the latest in a week that brought local and national attention to the town and university. That attention grew once Princeton police released a video of the arrest.
Princeton University President Christopher Eisgruber penned a statement in support of Perry last week, just a few days before Princeton council members bought lunch for the police department to show their support.
Perry also shut down her Twitter account last week, blaming harassment and hacking attempts.
