A boli water advisory is still in effect Monday following a water main break on Friday.
HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP -- A boil water advisory is still in place Monday for residents in the Washington Crossing Estates area of the township after a water main pipe broke Friday, police said.
The police department issued a statement Sunday that the damaged water main was fixed but until the test results sent Monday on tap water come back, residents should still boil water before using it.
"The water system has been disinfected, however, the boil water notice remains in effect," the statement read. "We anticipate the test results will be returned approximately 48 hours after they submitted to the laboratory."
Hopewell police said they would issue a statement when the test results are returned.
The Hopewell Township Health Department stated on Feb. 5 - the day the advisory was issued - that the main break caused a low-pressure condition which can allow for contaminants to infiltrate the system.
They issued the following precautions for residents to follow until the water is deemed safe:
Boil tap water for one minute then let cool before using for:
- Drinking
- Preparing foods, washing vegetables and fruit
- Cooking
- Making ice cubes
- Taking medications
- Brushing teeth
- Mixing baby formula, food, juices or drinks
The Township further recommends to:
- Throw away uncooked food or beverages or ice cubes if made with tap water during the day of the advisory
- Keep boiled water in the refrigerator for drinking
- Rinse hand-washed dishes for a minute in dilute bleach (one tablespoon of household bleach per gallon of tap water) or clean your dishes in a dishwasher using the hot wash cycle and dry cycle
- Do not swallow water while you are showering or bathing
- Provide pets with boiled water after cooling
- Do not use home filtering devices in place of boiling or using bottled water; most home water filter will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms
- Use only boiled water to treat minor injuries
