Residents can sign up for Affordable Care Act health plans through open enrollment at several locations until Jan. 31.

TRENTON -- Open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act ends Jan. 31 and the deadline is Friday Jan. 15 for healthcare coverage that would start on Feb. 1, Mercer County officials said.

Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes announced enrollment assistance would be provided at Trenton's McDade Administration Building - 640 South Broad St. - Wednesdays and Fridays throughout January from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. to help residents apply.

"This is a great opportunity for people who want help in accessing quality, affordable health coverage before the enrollment period closes," Hughes said. "I urge anyone who needs health insurance to take advantage of this in-person assistance."

Residents will need their Social Security numbers, birth dates, employer and income information (pay stubs or W-2 forms) and policy numbers for any health insurance plans.

Tarry Truitt, spokeswoman for United Way of Greater Mercer County, said if residents choose not to enroll online or over the phone at 1-800-318-2596, there are several places throughout the county where residents can go to sign up in person with help from trained professionals.

Truitt added once you get affordable health coverage, use it: "It's a great benefit. Go for regular health visits, get blood pressure taken. Women can use it for certain things like mammograms. A lot of people pay the money and then don't use it."
