Police responded to the area of Walnut Avenue and Chambers Street after shots rang out around 6 p.m. Saturday and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound, Police Lt. Stephen Varn said.

The man - whose name and age had not been identified Saturday - was rushed to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton where he was being treated in extremely critical condition, Varn said.

A woman who asked that her name not be published said she lived in the area and was watching a movie in her house Saturday night when her husband burst through the door saying that someone had been shot outside.

The neighbor said she's known the man who was shot for years and called him a "nice guy."

"I've never seen him do anything," she added. "It's hard to believe."
