Trenton man killed in Christmas Eve shooting, prosecutor says

Police responded to Ocean Heights Avenue near the intersection of Salma Terrace in Hamilton Township on Thursday after they received a 911 call reporting gunshots fired.

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP - A Trenton man is dead after a Christmas Eve shooting in a rural part of the township, the Atlantic County Prosecutor announced Saturday.

Police responded to Ocean Heights Avenue near the intersection of Salma Terrace on Thursday after they received a 911 call reporting gunshots fired, Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain said in a press release.

When they arrived, officers found 25-year-old Marquis T. Smith with an apparent gun shot wound.

Smith was transported to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center--Mainland Division, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Southern Regional Medical Examiner's Office is performing an autopsy on Smith.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit and the Township of Hamilton Police Department Detective Bureau are continuing to investigate the shooting.

Police say there is no immediate threat to area residents.
