Today's letters: local candidates voice their platforms

As a career Hamilton Township Police Officer, who served as both Officer Friendly and as a Drug Abuse Resistance Education  (DARE) officer, I spent countless hours in our local schools working to educate our children against drug and substance abuse.

Although I am now retired from that role, I remain passionate about educational programs that have proven to be effective in promoting healthy lifestyles for our children.

Today, efforts continued under the Hamilton Township Police Division  L.E.A.D. (Law Enforcement Against Drugs ) program, as well as efforts coordinated by the Hamilton Alliance Against Substance Abuse, the coordinating municipal body regarding substance abuse prevention education, remain effective tools.

The problems with drug addiction that we face in Hamilton Township are similar to  other suburban communities across our state and nation. We must confront the problem with proven educational programs and a continued sense of urgency.

I have demonstrated my commitment to address this challenge throughout my career in educational services. Our current mayoral administration has supported these educational programs and remain committed to these efforts in the future. My nomination to the Republican ticket is further evidence of this support.

Ralph Mastrangelo

Retired Hamilton Township police officer, Republican Council candidate

I am running for re-election to the WW-P School Board to continue advocating for the best educational opportunities for all learners.  With more than 20 years experience as a WW-P volunteer and taxpayer, I will continue to promote what is in the best interest of students while always remaining cognizant of the economic realities faced by our district and our taxpayers.

I currently serve as Board Vice President and chair the Administration and Facilities Committee.  I have served on two union negotiating teams, most recently as the chair.  As the liaison to the district's PTAs and the WW-P Education Foundation, I connect to day-to-day happenings at our schools and participate in discussions regarding innovative programs and strategic initiatives.  Since being elected in 2012, I have considered economy and efficiency in our budget, aiming to maximize our resources without compromising quality instruction.

I have a successful history of leadership, working productively with my fellow board members, students, parents, teachers, staff and administrators.  Given state budget caps, the prospect of future residential development and the financial pressure of our district's contractual obligations, our school board needs experienced people who understand the big picture.

I ask for your support on November 3rd.

Michele Kaish
