The high temperature eclipsed 70 degrees in parts of the state on Saturday. More possible record-breaking warmth is expected on Sunday.

Weather history was made in New Jersey this weekend, with parts of the state experiencing record-breaking warmth for early December on Saturday and Sunday.

The temperature peaked at 71 degrees at the Atlantic City airport on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service, breaking the previous record high of 67 degrees set in 1931.

In Trenton, the high temperature reached 68 degrees on Saturday. That surpassed the previous record high of 67 degrees, which was also set in 1931.

More than three dozen places across the eastern United States saw high temperatures that matched or exceeded previous records on Saturday, the National Weather Service said.

Newark did not break its record high on Saturday but it did on Sunday.

The high temperature at Newark airport hit 65 degrees on Saturday. The record high of 68 degrees was set in 1931.

With records highs in sight, just how rare is N.J.'s December heat wave?

At Newark, a record high of 63 degrees was recorded on Dec. 13, 1946, according to the National Weather Service.

Newark surpassed that record at 10:29 a.m. on Sunday.

The record high for December 13 at the airport in Atlantic City is 69 degrees. That record was set in 1991.

Just before noon on Sunday, the temperature was 71 degrees there.
