Isaiah Freeman, 19, was arrested and charged Nov. 29 with attempted murder, weapons offenses and aggravated assault, prosecutors said.

Freeman appeared before Judge Timothy Lydon, who declined to reduce his bail in a short hearing, prosecutors said.

Freeman is accused of firing a handgun at an unmarked police van being used by State Police and Mercer County Prosecutor's Office detectives as part of the Targeted Integrated Deployment Effort.

The TIDE initiative is an ongoing deployment of State Police and other agencies used to augment Trenton Police.

Members of the TIDE unit were patrolling on North Stockton Street near Wood Street around 5:40 p.m. Nov. 29 and saw a group of young men gathered on the corner, which is known for drug dealing and violent crimes, prosecutors said.

As police approached, the men scattered. Two ran west on Wood Street and around the corner of an apartment building. Troopers chased, prosecutors said.

As they rounded the corner, shots rang out. Three men were seen on the opposite side of the two that troopers were after. Troopers determined they were not involved and continued to pursue the original pair, prosecutors said.

The two were chased through a fenced alley between apartments and other officers contained the pair to the apartment complex. Freeman was found in one of the apartments a short time later, prosecutors said.

Police said a witness identified Freeman in a photo lineup as one of the two running from police and as the one who shot at police, according to prosecutors.

The handgun was never found, prosecutors said.
