Today's letters: criticizing Governor Chris Christie & Donald Trump
Kudos to the Times of Trenton for an intelligent editorial (11/29/15) calling on the state's General Assembly to override Gov. Christie's veto of the gun violence prevention bill, S.2360.
Faith leaders, gun violence prevention activists, and community leaders have also come together to call on all the Assembly to override this poorly written and dangerous conditional veto.
Readers should realize that the governor himself created a political problem that was not there, and simultaneously failed to solve a gun violence problem.
Gov. Christie took a simple piece of good government legislation and added 27 pages of changes to N.J.'s mental health laws.
Several of N.J.'s mental health associations have opposed these changes. The governor did not hold hearings or approach mental health care policy from a thoughtful or caring manner.
This blatant act of political obfuscation was designed to enhance his presidential campaign opportunities.
CeaseFire-NJ, the oldest gun violence prevention group in N.J., urges readers who care about gun violence prevention to take this opportunity to make a difference by calling or emailing their two Assemblypersons immediately and ask them to vote yes to override the governor's veto of S.2360. The national polling data of Republicans clearly shows Donald Trump is substantially in the lead. These polls also show that Senator Marco Rubio is the candidate who would beat Hillary Clinton with the widest margin in the 2016 national election. It is important for Republican voters to remember that not only Republicans vote in the national election. As William F. Buckley famously said "We need the most conservative candidate who can win." Donald Trump is not that man.
