TRENTON - A Trenton man driving on the wrong side of the road nearly hit a police cruiser before crashing his van on Route 29 early Friday, police said.
Trenton Police Officers Samuel Gonzalez and Jorge Meija were driving southbound on Route 29 near Memorial Drive shortly after 1 a.m. Friday when they had to swerve out of the way of an oncoming van speeding in the wrong direction, Lt. Stephen Varn said.
The officers turned around, but lost sight of the van, which was later found crashed into the Parkside Avenue bridge abutment, Varn said.
The driver, a 33-year-old city man, was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton with a compound fracture to his femur, Varn said.
No charges were filed Friday. The accident is under investigation, but it appears speed and alcohol were involved, Varn said.
