TRENTON -- The county clerk and other offices are set to move into a temporary space early next year while the courthouse annex undergoes a $40 million renovation over the next two years, officials said Monday.

Starting Jan. 8, the clerk and election offices will move to the sixth and seventh floors of 240 W. State Street, the state Judiciary's Division of Human Resources to the seventh floor and the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office to the seventh, eighth and ninth floors.

The project calls for a complete overhaul of the annex, which was built as an addition to the courthouse in 1938.

The work involves installing a fire sprinkler system and addressing other fire code issues; removing asbestos and demolishing the interior; installing new plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems and new walls, lighting and fixtures; and repairing and replacing sections of the masonry exterior that have fallen into disrepair.

The building is expected to receive LEED certification.

The $40 million price tag also includes the cost of leasing and fitting out the temporary space, said Phil Miller, executive director of the Mercer County Improvement Authority.
