Joint Base airmen fly to Haiti to aid in hurricane recovery

Once on the ground, the airmen will facilitate the movement of humanitarian aid and cargo.

JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST -- Members of the 621st Contingency Response Wing flew to Haiti early Thursday to aid the country's recovery from Hurricane Matthew, the base said in a statement.

More than 30 members of 621st flew on a U.S. Air force C-17 Globemaster III to Port-au-Prince, the country's capital.

Once on the ground, the airmen will facilitate the movement of humanitarian aid and cargo, the base said.

The wing's mission in the military is rapidly deploying personnel to quickly open airfields and establish military operations with other service branches.

Hurricane Matthew caused over 100 deaths in Haiti when it roared over the Carribbean island Tuesday as a category 4 storm packing winds nearly 150 miles per hour.
