John Miranda had been the district's athletic director since 2005
PRINCETON -- John Miranda, the longtime athletic director at Princeton Public Schools and former baseball coach, has died.
District officials said he died suddenly on Sunday, but did not give the cause of death. He was 57.
Miranda arrived at Princeton Public Schools in 1993 as a business education teacher at the high school before becoming the athletic director and supervisor of health and physical education in 2005.
"John went above and beyond his duty as an administrator," said Bob James, president of Friends of Princeton Athletics. "He was a huge fan and loved to see our students do well."
Miranda previously served as the high school's head baseball coach from 1996 through 2004. District officials said that as an athletic director, he never missed an Athletic Hall of Fame dinner, spearheaded the homecoming initiative and could be found at all district sporting events.
Before starting his career in teaching in 1987, he was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. He also served several tours in Iraq as a member of the reserves.
Miranda is survived by his wife, Jean, and their three sons, John Jr., Nicholas and Timothy.
"With his easygoing, upbeat personality, John was a friend to many," the district said.
