Leon Ross' charges included assault by auto, endangering the welfare of a child and DWI
TRENTON -- A Trenton man who police say was believed to be intoxicated when he crashed his car and fled the scene with a 3-year-old girl is facing multiple charges.
Police responded to East State and Monmouth streets at around 9:36 p.m. Tuesday on a report of a crash. They found an overturned Chevy Malibu, but with no driver in sight, said Lt. Stephen Varn. Witnesses told police that they saw a man, later identified as 29-year-old Leon Ross, exit the car with a child and flee the scene.
Shortly after an alert was broadcast, Sgt. Jason Astbury found Ross walking on Sheridan Avenue with the girl, Varn said. She was complaining of pain to her abdomen and taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton.
Ross was believed to be intoxicated and placed under arrest, Varn said. He told police that he was driving on Monmouth Street when an unknown car sideswiped him, causing him to crash.
Ross, who had a minor cut to his elbow, was taken to St. Francis Medical Center.
He is charged with assault by auto, endangering the welfare of a child, DWI, driving on the sidewalk, failing to report an accident, leaving the scene and two active warrants out of Lawrence.
