Jonathan Weathers allegedly stole the victim's wallet, cellphone and Fitbit. The victim has been removed from life support.

TRENTON -- A 60-year-old man has been removed from life support after he suffered bleeding on the brain, a collapsed lung and multiple broken bones in a vicious beating while being robbed earlier this month, prosecutors said Wednesday.

His alleged attacker, Jonathan Weathers, 25, of Trenton, currently faces attempted murder and robbery charges, but that would be upgraded to murder if the man succumbs to his injuries, prosecutors said.

He is not expected to survive, prosecutors said at a bail hearing Wednesday for Weathers.

Prosecutors said Weathers was driving his girlfriend's 1999 Nissan Maxima on South Broad Street looking for someone to rob at about 1 a.m. on Aug. 2 when he saw the 60-year-old man.

Weathers' girlfriend, who was in the car, tried to talk him out of the robbery, but he stopped the car and ordered her to stay in the driver's seat, prosecutors said.

Weathers beat the man and took his leather wallet, cell phone and Fitbit exercise tracker, prosecutors said.

The man remained unconscious off Lamberton St. until he was found about two hours later.

Weathers used the cash from the wallet to buy cigarettes, prosecutors said.

He later tried to burn the leather wallet but when that didn't work he threw it in the sewer, prosecutors said. The phone was stashed in bushes outside of the house where Weathers was staying, according to prosecutors.

Weathers' girlfriend provided an eyewitness account of the beating and there's surveillance video showing Weathers in the area at the time of the attack, prosecutors said.

Weathers' defense attorney said that there was no intent to kill to the victim during the robbery.

Weathers has a dozen previous criminal charges, some of which resulted in convictions, prosecutors said.

Weathers was out on bail at the time of the attack on a domestic violence charge.

Judge Pedro Jimenez called Weathers a "persistent offender" and maintained Weathers' bail at $500,000 on robbery and attempted murder charges.

He increased the bail for the domestic violence charge to $35,000.
