TRENTON -- City police officers talked an suicidal man from the ledge of a bridge over Route 1 Friday evening, officials said.
The incident, which began at about 5:30 p.m., caused police to shut down traffic onto the highway on a stretch just north of Perry Street and south of North Olden Avenue, police said.
The fire department also responded to the incident and located the man on a former railroad bridge, officials said.
Eventually, police officers that speak Spanish talked the man out of jumping. He was taken by ambulance to a city hospital for examination.
The closures exacerbated the evening commuter rush and caused long lines of cars seeking detours in the area.
By 7 p.m. police officers were starting to allow traffic back onto the highway.
