The fire department responded to the scene at about 11:30 a.m. Friday and was still on scene at 1:15 p.m.

TRENTON -- Utility workers ruptured a 4-inch natural gas line on Cuyler Avenue in Trenton's East Ward Friday morning forcing authorities to evacuate homes in the area, officials said.

The Trenton Fire Department was on standby at the street's intersection with Greenwood Avenue, and police had the area blocked off to vehicles.

The fire department responded to the scene at about 11:30 a.m. and was still on scene at 1:15 p.m.

PSE&G said at 1:30 p.m. that crews were making repairs and they had the gas shut off as of 12:11 p.m.

About eight homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure, the utility company said. Residents have since been allowed back into their homes and the area was deemed safe.

During the evacuations, Trenton officials brought a "cooling bus" to the scene where residents could wait in comfort.
