A police detective charged Jonathan B. Weathers with attempted murder and robbery late Wednesday at police headquarters following questioning, Trenton police said. He'd been detained early Wednesday.

The victim remains at a Trenton hospital in grave condition, police spokesman Lt. Rolando Ramos said.

"It was a vicious, vicious beating," Ramos said.

The charges allege Weathers followed the victim as he walked near his home and repeatedly kicked and punched him, then fled with the man's cell phone and cash.

Neighbors found the man unconscious on Lamberton Street at about 3 a.m. on Tuesday Aug. 2 and called for police and EMS.

Ramos said detectives suspected Weathers as a suspect - he did not say how - and also started looking for a distinctive Nissan Maxima car they connected to the investigation.

The car was stopped by city police early Wednesday and Weathers was at the wheel. He was taken into police custody on unrelated warrants previously issued for his arrest, Ramos said.

He was charged after being interviewed by detectives, led by Detective Brian Jones.

Ramos said detectives believe only one person attacked the victim.

Records show Weathers served two separate state prison terms from 2013 to 2015 for drug dealing convictions in Mercer County. He was released from state custody in in November 2015.
