TRENTON -- Four Mercer County nonprofits have received a combined $65,000 in grants from the Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, the charitable arm of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey.

The foundation awarded $846,600 to 11 community-based organizations for programs and initiatives focused on improving public health and quality of life.

The following Mercer nonprofits received money:

  • Trenton-based Isles received $30,000 to support its Healthy Homes Training to Reduce Asthma program. The initiative trains social workers and other home visitors to become well-versed in the environmental triggers of asthma, assess the condition of a home's indoor health and the resident's practices that trigger asthma and develop an action plan and recommendations to remediate problems.
  • McCarter Theatre Company in Princeton received $10,000 to support its Access to the Arts program, which provides accessibility services for mobility-, visually- or hearing-impaired patrons.
  • The Passage Theatre Company in Trenton received a $10,000 general operating support grant to fund its programming, arts education activities and staffing.
  • Princeton-based Young Audiences of New Jersey received $15,000 to carry out its Family Arts and Creativity program in four Trenton elementary and middle schools. The program is designed to promote child learning, strengthen families and bring together young people, their parents and professional teaching artists in hands-on workshops.
